Hello,

Modelling is all about accuracy: trying to be as close as possible to the original item, making sure components are the right size and details are the right colour. However, once in a while, it is refreshing to work on projects which are a bit less restricting than the usual or which allow a different train of thoughts.

Narrow gauge is one such project. We have talked in the past about OO9 and how this combines the space saving benefits of N gauge with the details of OO gauge.

Now, if you have a bit more space, what about going one size bigger? 7mm narrow gauge, also known as On30 or even O-16.5, could be described as O gauge on OO gauge track. That is 1:43 scale running on standard OO track.

Ready to run engines and wagons are available from Bachmann (contact us for availability) but where is the fun in that? Why not build one yourself? Smallbrook Studio produces several kits that are great fun to build. The engine sit on the Hornby "Smokey Joe" chassis while the wagons come complete. Click on any picture to get more details.

Now, if you are more adventurous, what about modelling a railway that never actually existed? You may be familiar with the cartoons and kinetic sculptures of Rowland Emett, but did you know that you can build engines, coaches and wagons inspired by them? They are in Gn15 (1:24 scale Narrow Gauge or Garden Railway scale on OO gauge track). Talk about something different! Once again, if you click on any picture, you will get full details.

As a bonus,  here are some pictures of the Gn15 layout that is currently in our spare room. It is using the kits above as well as other things.

We exhibited it some time ago at the Modelling Exhibition in Sandown. Now is the right time for us to pass it on to someone else. It comes complete with the layout, lighting, engines and wagons. If you are interested, contact us for details.

Send us an email or give us a call to check availability or to reserve anything, whatever scale you model in. As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.

Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street. So no excuse not to come and visit us!

Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm, Sunday from 1pm till 4pm. We are closed only on Monday.
