Hello,

When you model, the final coat of paint can make or break your work. This is why it is important to get it right. The front of Upstairs Downstairs got painted this week. Did we get it right? Do tell us next time you are visiting us!

Building scenery is always a big part of any layout work. To create a typical valley scene you first have to use some formers. They can be pieces of cardboard, wood, newspaper wads or even Woodland Scenics gradients, risers, etc... Here are some pictures of their range.

Once the formers are in place, you want to cover them with something to make them sturdy and strong enough to hold their shape. Once again, there are various options such as papier maché (more newspapers needed!) or plaster cloth. Plaster cloth is usually faster to apply, dries quicker and is slightly less messy.

Rocks can be cast from moulds. For castings, we recommend Hydrocal. This is a plaster like product that is lighter and stronger than plaster of Paris. It also has the advantage of not cracking easily as it retains some flexibility.

And then, you put a coat of paint to have a ground colour and you can start working above ground with grass, trees, building, etc. But this is matter for another newsletter.

Send us an email or give us a call to check availability or to reserve anything, whatever scale you model in. As usual, if we do not have in stock what you are looking for, we will order it for you and you will get it fast (usually within a week if the manufacturer has it in stock). We place weekly orders with most suppliers.

Remember, you can park for free for one hour on the High Street. And the car park in York Road is still free every Tuesday from 1pm so you can spend the afternoon with us. So no excuse not to come and visit us!

Upstairs Downstairs is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4.30pm, Sunday from 1pm till 4pm. We are closed only on Monday.
