You have to admit nothing beats the breathtaking impression you get when seeing a train going up a gradient to reach the upper level of a layout.
There are numerous ways to create such a gradient. Traditionally you would take a piece of wood supported by wooden legs but this gets quite heavy quickly. Or you could use crumpled newspapers and some plaster cloth on top, but is it difficult to create a smooth surface.
Woodland Scenics came to the rescue a few years ago and launched some inclines, risers and profiles. They are suitable for all scales, lightweight and easy to work with. You can find the full range on our website by clicking here.
Here is a summary of what the various components do:
- Profile boards are used to enclose your layout or at least do the back and sides. You can link them together to reach any height you require and they can be cut to shape. You can then easily stick your backscene or add hills or buildings in front.
- Risers are used to raise the track area. Available in various heights from 1/2 inch to 4 inches.
- Inclines create your gradients. They come in several steepness from 2% to 4%. Obviously the steeper it is, the faster the train goes up and the less space you need however the downside is it will be more difficult for the train to go up and this can look unrealistic.
There are two versions: starter sets which contain several strips going up, and full packs with one long strip going up to the maximum height. In the first case you need to use risers, in the other case you don't. The pictures below will make more sense:
- Accessories such as foam pencils to plan your cutting, foam knife with an extra long blade, hot wire cutter for intricate work, foam nails to hold everything in place before you glue using the foam glue, flex paste to fill gaps and create a hard texture, etc.
