When looking at pictures of freight trains there is something immediately obvious: they are more exciting when the wagons are carrying goods! However, when getting model wagons, they are usually empty. A very easy improvement to make is to fill them: you can easily add coal or sand, but did you know there is a large range of other types of loads available? They are also suitable for lorries. Here are a few example in OO gauge (they also exist in N gauge) from Ten Commandments. As usual click on any picture for full details.
On a similar token, when looking at railway buildings such as stations, you can see lots of signs indicating where the platforms are and other crucial information. Such signs are available for a variety of manufacturers, here are some examples from Gaugemaster, coverings most regions in OO gauge.
People breathe life to a layout. An empty town is never a happy place. Make your stations, villages and roads full of life with a few figures. Here are a few ideas in N gauge from Noch and P&D Marsh.
